As we face steep rises in electricity prices, managing energy use plays an increasingly important role in business operations. Recognising the rising costs and their impact on the environment, we decided in 2015 to engage consultants for a comprehensive energy audit of our site. Our primary goal was to identify energy savings and, more importantly, reduce our carbon footprint. We are committed to doing our part to preserve the environment for future generations, and we have implemented several changes to our business that we are proud of.
The energy audit provided valuable recommendations, including the implementation of an alternative energy plan that would yield cost-effective outcomes both in the short and long term. The on-site survey analysis indicated an annual electrical usage of 129,104 kWh, with our site’s greenhouse gas emissions representing 102 tonnes of carbon dioxide released per year. Clearly, something had to be done.
Taking action on the audit's integrated recommendations has had a significant impact on our operations. Reid Print Technologies has successfully halved its annual electricity bill, effectively "future-proofing" our business against anticipated electricity price rises. The initial project involved replacing the majority of the existing lighting in our factory and office spaces with high-quality LED technology, which is far more energy-efficient. Additionally, we implemented an on-site renewable energy power source by installing solar panels.
These changes have not only reduced our operational costs but have also significantly decreased our environmental impact. The switch to LED lighting alone has contributed to substantial energy savings, while the solar panels generate clean, renewable energy, further reducing our dependence on fossil fuels.
We are proud of the progress we have made and remain dedicated to continuous improvement in our sustainability practices. Below, you can see more details about the sustainable solutions we currently have installed in our factory.

As we strive to reduce our environmental impact and transition to sustainable energy sources, solar panels have emerged as a pivotal solution. Harnessing the sun's energy offers numerous benefits that align with our sustainability goals.
One of the most significant advantages of solar panels is their ability to provide a continuous and reliable supply of clean energy. Unlike fossil fuels, which are finite and deplete natural resources, solar energy is abundant and renewable. Solar panels also play a vital role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, a critical factor in our commitment to the environment. Traditional energy sources, such as coal and natural gas, release significant amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In contrast, solar panels are able to generate electricity without emitting any of these harmful pollutants.
Since the completion of the initial project, extra Solar PV panels have been added to maximise our electricity savings. Also, to ensure that our highly computerised equipment is safeguarded from external elements, the facility has been further protected with the installation of power regulating and surge equipment.

In our pursuit of sustainability and operational efficiency, we have integrated several Ortea energy-saving voltage stabilisers at Reid Print Technologies. These devices are now indispensable to the workplace at our factory, ensuring a consistent and stable power supply crucial for the smooth operation of our highly computerised equipment.
Voltage fluctuations often result in inefficient energy use, leading to increased power consumption and higher electricity bills. A voltage stabiliser also reduces energy waste, which means less electricity is required to achieve the same output. This results in fewer greenhouse gas emissions associated with power generation.
Moreover, by ensuring a stable voltage supply, these stabilisers protect our sensitive equipment from potential damage caused by power surges or drops. This not only prolongs the lifespan of our machinery but also reduces the need for frequent repairs or replacements, leading to further resource conservation and cost savings.

Water recycling offers significant benefits, including reducing the diversion of water from sensitive ecosystems, decreasing wastewater discharges, and minimising pollution. Our Grunig G-Wash 144 screen washer, which utilises recycled water, aligns with our sustainability standards at Reid Print Technologies.
The advanced screen washer not only conserves water but also ensures that the water we use is efficiently recycled and reused within our processes. This leads to substantial reductions in our overall water consumption and operational costs.
The innovative design of the G-Wash 144 allows for the effective removal of ink and other residues from our screens, using recycled water that is filtered and treated within the system. This means we can maintain high standards of cleanliness and productivity without relying on fresh water resources. Additionally, the system's efficient use of recycled water helps us meet regulatory requirements for wastewater management, further contributing to our environmental commitment efforts.

Our decision to implement Braemar evaporative air conditioners reflects our commitment to sustainability and efficiency in our factory operations. Unlike traditional refrigerated systems, these units utilise a natural cooling process that eliminates the use of harmful synthetic refrigerants. This not only enhances the comfort and well-being of our workforce, but also reduces our carbon footprint.
The energy savings achieved with evaporative cooling have also been notable, with these systems consuming up to 80% less energy than conventional refrigerated air conditioning. This cost-effectiveness translates into significant savings on our utility bills, while supporting our broader sustainability goals.
Beyond the environmental and financial benefits, our Braemar evaporative air conditioners have a reduced reliance on mechanical components, which results in fewer maintenance requirements and longer equipment lifespan. This reliability not only minimises downtime and operational disruptions, but also reduces the overall environmental impact associated with these maintenance activities.

We have installed LED lighting throughout both our factory and administrative spaces at Reid Print Technologies. LEDs are highly efficient in converting electricity into light, consuming significantly less energy than incandescent and fluorescent bulbs. This efficiency translates directly into reduced electricity usage and lower utility bills for our operations. By optimising energy consumption, we not only minimise operational costs but also contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing our carbon footprint.
LED lighting also lasts up to 25 times longer than conventional lighting options. This means reduced maintenance and replacement costs over time, keeping our productivity high while operational downtime is minimised.
Additionally, LED lights emit little heat compared to traditional bulbs, which reduces the strain on our cooling systems during Queensland's warmer months. This dual benefit of energy efficiency and heat reduction contributes to overall operational efficiency and comfort in our workplace environment.
