Product Overview

Reid Industrial is a supplier of high reliability flexible printed circuits, generally manufactured on Polyimide PI substrates due to their resistance to heat and excellent flexibility. Using advanced manufacturing processes, we specialise in single, double-sided and multi-layer flex circuit assemblies, all with SMD capabilities. The flex circuits are built to your exacting specifications, meeting the most demanding of applications in the medical device, semiconductor, test & manufacturing equipment, industrial equipment, and aerospace markets.

Things to Consider

To ensure that your design is delivered in the shortest lead time, it is best to supply us with a scaled vector drawing. This should include locations of components and buttons and have a complete BOM of required parts.

With Flexible Circuits, where components are attached or where the flexible circuit board is to be bent as it attached to the device, stiffeners are required.
Why? Stiffeners prevent damage to the copper traces of the Flex PCB and are made to the exact height of the insertion point of the connector.

Flexible PCBs, by their nature can be made to odd or intricate shapes; they may not be a convenient rectangle. After the Flex PCB is manufactured, it has to be cut to shape, a machined metal tool will be required and with most projects off tool samples will be supplied for approval. Small production runs and Prototypes will also need tooling; the same tooling can also be used for larger production runs as your requirement grows.

When there will be continuous or dynamic flexing of the circuit material, special considerations are needed. On multi-layered Flex PCs, this includes taking into account the number of layers while making sure that the conductors will not be fatigued when the FPC is flexed.

Flexible printed circuit from Reid Industrial Graphic Products are designed and fabricated to the highest quality standards using only the best materials.

Features & Benefits :

Physical Advantages for Flexible Printed Circuits (FPC) and Flexible Flat Cables (FFC).

  • More flexibility than rigid PCB’s, as the name suggests.
  • Improved resistance to vibrations and movement; lower mass/weight and thickness.
  • Smaller package size.
  • Allows the circuit to bend to its desired applicable shape.
  • Allows for more compact devices.
  • High tensile strength—can be significantly molded/deformed without breakage.
  • High conformity to bending—can be wrapped multiple times around a cylindrical object.
  • Easier to prepare for harsh environments.
  • The use of Flexible Flat Cables (FFC) generally used as joiners and extensions, can bend without being damaged, and takes up less space than traditional copper wire harnesses.
  • Manufacturing and Assembly Advantages

Conductor Materials

Copper is the most commonly used material for circuit traces and offers the most cost effective solution. Thickness typically ranges from 0.050mm to .100mm. Reid also has the capability to supply circuits from specialty metals to support specific applications, for example Soft or Hard Nickel and Gold. It is recommended that if metal snap domes are required for the device, only high quality stainless steel should be used, this is generally recommended due to greater actuation life, corrosion resistance, trip force properties and reduced contact resistance.

Insulator Materials

Polyimide film is the most common insulator material used for flex circuits. Reid Industrial uses this film as the base layer on single metal layer flex circuits and for inner layers of multi-layer circuits.
